Judy and Wayne Acton

Members of the Acton family have been making their distinctive folk jewelry since the 1970's. With various partners Wayne has participated at the Portland (Oregon) Saturday Market since its inception. Those first years at the market produced incredible synergy, with a dozen or so maturing jewelers meeting and exploring on a weekly basis.

Wayne and Judy met at the PSM in 1978, started a family and moved to Vernonia Oregon, an isolated timber community in the Coast Range northwest of Portland. "The immediate impact on the work was a to change the metal from brass to sterling silver. Some of my early designs may have been a touch impractical." Two sons came along and participated materially in the family business. After a dozen years Wayne and Judy branched out, leaving the PSM and showing their work at galleries and fairs, and becoming members of the Oregon Country Fair.

Finally in 2003, empty nesters Wayne and Judy have returned to their roots at the market. "We are very committed to a ‘folk craft’ philosophy, both in our work and in our lifestyle. The PSM just feels like home to us. We are also very excited about extending this personal, homely touch through the internet." . The folk style of actonjewelry is characterized by the construction method known as fabrication, where metal in the form of wire and sheet is hand formed and hard soldered together. No casting techniques are involved. Bezel set cabochon cut stones are also important elements. The making tradition we work in is ancient and global. You can find it from Ireland to Bali to Oaxaca.
