CMAG General Meeting

7:15 pm, Tuesday, MAY 13 / Multnomah Arts Center, Rm 34

Program

“THE SECRET OF THE SAMURAI SWORD”
A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

We will be showing this NOVA feature of last fall which shows NOVA’s “investigation of the centuries-old secrets behind the making of this ultimate medieval superweapon. The program follows fifteen traditional Japanese craftsmen who spend nearly six months creating a sword, from smelting the ore to forging the steel and finally to sharpening the blade to its keen and deadly edge.” Lee Haga thought so highly of this dvd that she bought this copy for herself and is lending it to us.

We will also have a presentation of a brief summary of the just-completed Spring Show. A discussion about the show is scheduled for a separate time.

June 10 Program:

Carey Smith will expand our creative thinking with a presentation about “Art Jewelry” that incorporates non-traditional metals and materials.

CMAG By-Law Amendment Update

This will be (finally, patience please) brought to a vote at the May General Meeting. Any comments from any member may be directed to me, Wayne Acton, the secretary, by email, post or telephonically and I will see to its circulation.

The board has voted to present the following revisions of the by-laws to the general membership for a vote. Proposed amendments are to Article III – Executive Board, Sections 1 & 4

The current language is : Section 1. The Executive Board shall consist of the (four) officers plus seven members in good standing, and the Past President. and Section 4. Seven members of the Executive Board shall be deemed a quorum.

The amended language would be: Section 1. The Executive Board shall consist of the (four) officers plus up to seven members in good standing, and the Past President. and Section 4. Four members of the Executive Board shall be deemed a quorum.

Explanation for amending: For reasons difficult to identify, CMAG has had to operate for some time with fewer board members than required and often no quorums at board meetings. Sometimes a work-around like virtual voting has been employed; sometimes active board members have just gone ahead and done what’s necessary. These changes reflect the reality of our situation.

Process for amending By-Laws: ARTICLE VII - PROCEDURE TO AMEND BY-LAWS Section 1. Proposal to amend the By-laws may be made by any member in good standing upon presenting in writing the desired amendment or amendments to the President who shall in turn present them to the general membership at the next meeting of the general membership. Section 2. The By-laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the general membership in good standing at that meeting.
