President's Message

Hail from the Chief and Presidential Musings

We slogged through another Spring Show, and a good time was had by all regardless of what we may have moaned or groaned about at the time.

It is always good that we have a whole year to forget how much work it takes to put this together!

I do not know at this time what our sales total was for the show but it seemed like a normal show with some of us making decent sales and some of us hoping we get some good out of all the business cards we passed out.

We need to thank those who worked so hard to make this show go so smoothly and look so good. We also need to start the work for next year. We will be meeting this month to begin the organizing for next year, and as always we need some of you to set up and help. Help! Be brave and commit some of your time so next year we can have another great show without it being a great burden on the shoulders of too few members.

If you were someone who was frustrated with this aspect or another of how the show was going, you are exactly the person we need to help make it better next year. If this was your first year of doing the show, you have just the kind of fresh blood we would like to drain and donate for the cause. A little edit here: If this was your first year of doing the show, you now have some experience we would love to utilize for next year’s show!

This is our most visible venue for our Guild and we need it to move forward year after year. This year we were visited by members of the Seattle and British Columbian Metalsmithing Guilds, coming down to see our show and helping connect us to our fellow metal craftspeople. They do not have any show like ours and I hope we can inspire them to organize similar events in their areas.

See you at the next meeting, Bruce

May 11, 2010 - GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM
"Anticlastic Forming"
By Rebecca Melton

Rebecca, who will be giving a workshop on the technique in July, will present a talk on anticlastic forming. According to the website aurhelion.net "While raising stretches the central part of a piece of sheet metal and compresses the edges, resulting in cup shapes, anticlastic forming compresses the central part and stretches the edges, resulting in forms most often described as saddle-shaped."
Rebecca's workshop will be held July 10 and 11 from 9 AM to 3 PM with a lunch break. The entire workshop will be on anticlastic raising focusing on proper use of tools and various uses for this technique in jewelry. Metal and the raising stake will be provided for the students. Those attending the workshop should bring their own hammers (raising and plannishing and even textured hammers are welcome.) The fee is $50.00 for the two days. Deadline to sign up is May 19th. Last I heard, two spots were left and she will consider scheduling a second if interest warrants.

June: Asian Art-Symbolism

Lewis and Clark College professor, Dawn Odell, whose research focuses on the exchange objects and artistic influence between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries will give a lecture on the symbolism of Asian art. Her talk will touch on subjects from Buddhist iconography to ink painting to porcelain decoration and will consider the "translation" of Asian symbolism into European art.

"GRS Tools" April 2010
presented by Bruce McKay

"You know that loose stuff that gets blown into magazines?" says Bruce to get the program started. "Well the guy who founded GRS invented that." So he had, presumably, capital to invest and also an interest in engraving gun steel. He went on to found perhaps the most esteemed company in the field of engraving and bench metal-working tools.

That was the sort of interesting impromptu Bruce always brings to our meetings, so even repeating a topic leads to a completely new program. Bruce is a veritable font of accumulated experience and wisdom on all aspects of the professional bench-jeweler trade.

This time he related the medical reasons for using GRS systems. Bruce is having some of the difficulties with his hands and arms and maybe back, which so often happen to those of us doing this close work. Bruce showed how these tools can relieve a lot of the physical stress and bad posture.

Just now I'm looking at the small GRS dream catalogue which was available at the meeting. And starting to dream. There's a great picture of an engraved pheasant on the front. And on the back info about the weeklong GRS training courses which Bruce once attended. Go to www.grstools.com to see more. Wayne.

General Meeting ReportGo back to contents
Report of CMAG General Meeting April 13, 2010

Note: I'm changing these meeting reports to include more of what's going to happen and not so much stuff that happened but that's not so much pertinent anymore. So, not minutes.

Board: Before the General Meeting at 6 pm in room 33. Well attended. discussion of Guild Council membership. Budget review scheduled for regular October Board Meeting. Budget status looking good, there's some money to spend, come help.

Visitors: Packed house! Again. John, mate of Glori Redfern.Saylor, was dragged to the meeting to get some inspiration. He also drove and later on helped a lot at the show. Lyle, from Cali and a friend of Leroy Goertz, does blacksmithing and welding. Iisha Shorey is a new member and I have some vauge note about her MAC association but I don't remember if as instructor or student. Will check.

Newsletter: Deadline for inclusion is the end of the day of the Monday which is a week before the General meeting. Eight days before in other words, usually it's the same month, sometime previous.

Guild Council: Mandy Allen attends and reports. Our membership is $350 per year. We will be deciding whether to renew later this year. The Council is moving toward professional development and advocacy for art and craft. It's involved with MCC and PNWAC and Etsy and co producing workshops. Moving away from local guild coordination for the Spring Show. Eight guilds are currently members. For more see Mandy's article below and visit the websites she suggests and make the contacts she includes. More CMAG members are likely welcome at the Council meetings.

Library: Hobbs Wells solicits suggestions and donations. See her article below. Bruce continues to digitize the tape videos.

Spring Show: Meeting had much ado here, as you might imagine, most all in the past now. There will be a separate debriefing meeting, looks like, May 18 or 19, at Greg Wilbur's house, details hopefully at May General Meeting. I'm not publishing the sales figures here but they're a lot better than last year though still a long way to go to match our best, details hopefully at May General Meeting. The name "gathering of the Guilds" made it into advertising albeit usually as subtitle to "OPA Showcase." Big congratulations to us all on a major effort. I made it through, but got pretty scratchy by the end. Even with a king size bed at my son's fancy hotel. Couldn't resist a 'John & Yoko' picture.

Programs: Mari Pritchard, who's taken over the helm from Linda Apodaca (offering great appreciation to Linda on all behalfs for the years she's programmed) … Mari has printed a schedule of the 2010 programs which is nearly complete, barring misadventure. EVERYBODY PLEASE NOTE that the AUGUST GENERAL MEETING will NOT be held at our usual MAC room but at Daniel Baca's Studio. In August. So Lyn Simon can make a horrible racket and showers of sparks. This is a novel departure for CMAG so PAY ATTENTION and don't be the only one at the wrong address.

Q & A: Shawn Daughton asked about keeping pearls on a post. Mary Wong lead several others in spirited and detailed instruction. Condensing probably centuries of combined experience. The gist seemed to me to be, the post has got to fit the hole exactly right and use the proper adhesive.

Respectfully reported, Wayne

Spring Show
By Debra Carus

It's a Wrap! the 2010 CMAG show is over but we can't forget to say a huge thank you to everyone for participating, planning, and volunteering hours to make the show happen. In particular, kudos to our committe chairs for the endless hours and problem solving that goes into making a smooth-running show. Next time you see Mary Wong, Joe and Linda Apodaca, Jessica Vasi, Mandy Allen, Suzanne Arkless, Nancy Hoyt, Ken Patton, Heather Schiffke, Tami Dean, Linda Bretana, Barbara Covey, Dan Rosenquist and Dorothy Overman, Wayne Acton, Philip Panepento, Alma Rands, Greg Wilbur and Randy Rasmussen...don't forget to say thanks for their comittee chair work. Everyone who takes part in the show also deserves a round of applause for their volunteer efforts. And a special thanks to our fearless leader, Judy Acton - please don't forget to thank her for all she did to keep this show going!

We will be organizing a show "de-brief" soon and start the planning process all over again for next year. If you have comments, suggestions, constructive critique, tips and/or gifts of chocolate, please pass them along to the proper authorities. As with everything we do in CMAG, we rely on volunteer efforts and ideas to be the best guild we can be. Let us know what we can do to continue to improve. Once the dust settles, show results and news will be shared at an upcoming monthly meeting.

Signing off for the 2010 show, Debra

CMAG Library
From Hobbs Wells

Got a library message from Hobbs Wells. The book report thing is close to my heart. She sends part of the CMAG Amazon wish list, which I bet you can visit and probably augment and maybe help prioritize and hopefully endow.

Hello Wayne! Hello Bruce! Attached are four jpeg files, which is my wishlist for books for the CMAG library. … Thought I should start some little entry for the newsletter, about books and the library. I'll do a book review of one of my current favorites on jewelry, a jeweler, or something connected with metalsmithing/jewelry books for the next issue. For this one:

"From the CMAG Library Corner - CMAG's library is a wonderful resource for all of its members. Many of you have enjoyed the privilege of checking out books, videos, DVDs, or periodicals from the CMAG library over the years. If you have items that are long overdue, please contact Hobbs to arrange to get them back to the library. If you're unable to make it to a meeting, she will make arrangements to meet you and pick-up the library materials.

CMAG would like to expand the library and we woud like to hear from you about items you think worthy of inclusion in our library. Please email your suggestions to Hobbs Wells: coquinette@q.com

See you at our next meeting!"

Portland City Faire

Creative Metal Arts Guild
To whom it may concern,

My name is Gina and I represent Portland City Faire, a grass roots, non profit community festival seeking to support local musicians, artists and performers. We are also a barter and trade event. Currently we are in the process of building our community support base. As of right now we have Portland City Repair, Pacific NW Sculptors, Oregon Food Bank, and soon hopefully the Portland Artist Network.

As a community partner we only ask you to promote our event within your community. In exchange we will offer you a free booth space in the main stage area of the festival for the duration of the event, and your organizations name will be included on all major advertising as well. In addition, we will thank our community sponsors regularly through out the day on the main stage and direct people over to your booth.

Also, you are welcome to organize any activities and or community workshops, just say the word and we will have it included on our website and activity schedule.

Please see our website for more event details:

At MCC

VISITING ARTIST
Cat Mazza
In residence May 18-22

Cat Mazza will work and perform in the Museum each day from 11am-6pm. Additionally, Mazza's Nike Blanket Petition (2003-08), normally on view in the Gestures of Resistance Study Center, will be fully deployed in The Lab during the artist's residency.

Cat Mazza, whose Nike Blanket Petition earned her acclaim in both the craft and anti-sweatshop movements, embarks on a new project intended to initiate a conversation around global manufacturing practices. Setting up a process by which knitted cast-offs of American brands are unmade - cut into strips or unraveled into a stitched sculpture - Mazza will develop a workshop environment where visitors can participate in a discussion about the global garment industry. Alongside this production process, Mazza will display videos about the feminization of labor.
