Editor's CommentsThe November meeting will wrap up 2009 for CMAG as far as the monthly gatherings go. Everybody gets a break, to feverishly contend with the holidays, especially those of us retailing. I'm contemplating a small newsletter message in December, if anyone has anything to say. I'd like to take a moment to thank Barbara Covey who besides taking over at Treasurer for CMAG (a fairly demanding job, technically, easily puzzling to the newcomer,) has acted as photographer for the newsletter at general meetings. Several of her pictures are in every newsletter and the meeting picture pages on the web, accessed through the archive index at www.cmaguild.org/picts.html are mostly shots she's taken. Member pictures are always welcome here and easy to publish. Happy Holidays. Wayne | ||||
Nov 10, 2009 - GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM
"Implement Innovations" By Our Members ![]() ![]()
We all develop innovative changes to our tools to better suit our needs. We reshape our pliers, invent new texturing tools, invent new implements to polish things, and we use items never meant to be used in a metals shop. Tuesday's meeting will be presented by the group, sharing the tools you have invented. What is in fact being presented however is the essence of creativity which brings us together in the first place. More than anything else we do, I feel that these show and tell sessions spread the sort of inspiration and innovation which is at the heart of all our work. |
After writing this up last month, I started looking at my tool drawers differently and found that the box of bezel closing implements, garnered over the (tell me it's not really) decades, doesn't contain a single item made commercially. I do use one of those black-handled burnishers; as an ice pick in the kitchen. So I'm going to bring some setting tools. We want to see your clever tool discoveries (or the borrowed discoveries) that make your work easier. Plus, everyone would love to see repeat sharings of your favorite tool tricks. |
Dec. & Jan. Please remember that no general meeting is held in December. For our January 12 program Debra Carus will give a presentation on the use of the bronze and copper metal clays that came out last summer. Debra regularly teaches classes on metal clays and thinks that these new ones might be perfect for small sculptures. Visit her website at: www.elentari-handverk.com |
Woven Chain, Oct 2009 presented by Judy & Wayne Acton You really don't know what you're doing until you try to teach it to someone. The corollary is you could find out you don't know what you think you do when you try to teach it to someone. Actually, I already knew I didn't know—how to make stitches on the woven chain that is. This after describing it infinite times at shows. But I thought I had it except a couple bits, which I could easily puzzle out by trial and error. Wrong. But at the October program I learned it, at least for a little while. This was a very enjoyable program for us to present. It's always energizing to put on something for the guild, gets me thinking and interested. The butterflies one comes to accept, surely there's not a more forgiving or helpful audience available anywhere. They're always there at first but one learns to get through it. It's especially rewarding when Judy and I can collaborate. This was apparently a reprise though we'd pretty much forgotten but Mary Wong brought about two inches of a brass chain she'd started at the last go round. Can't begin to say when that was. Hopefully somebody out there is still working at a necklace, let me know how it's going and if there's any way to help.Wayne

Report of CMAG General Meeting October 2009
The October general meeting was called to order by Bruce McKay, who calls himself "The President by Default" and claims that without CMAG, he'd have no social life. Well there'd hardly be time, given the vivacious whirl we keep up around here. Seriously, Bruce is a tested veteran in the position and I'm sure I speak for everybody, in thanking Bruce for taking up this position and in offering help to make his reign successful.
Bruce's student/assistant, Lyndon has taken the plunge and become a new member. She's learning metal now and has experience as a painter. Glory Red Fern of McMinnville attended as a guest invited by Maggie Bowman on the strength of a necklace Glory was wearing. She also claims to have no social life so she's come to the right place. Membership reports an alarmingly low 43 as the number of CMAGgers extant at this time. The roster is kept as an excel file which I get updated each month to send out this message. I notice it's still got about 90 names on it but a good many aren't hi-lited, indicating that a renewal form has not been received for them. I still send these newsletters though. Spring Show applications are sent out and some are returning. Deadline is November 15th. If you didn't get one or if you need to make financial arrangements call show treasurer, Judy Acton at 503 886 9037. If you're new to the show and want some mentoring contact Mary Wong. Meetings with representatives of the other guilds are ongoing and will likely culminate in increased cooperation in the areas of advertising and publicity. The CMAG Showcase at the Museum of Contemporary Craft is underway and many of the demo slots were filled. This runs through Nov 28th.
Mari Prichard has undertaken to be program director for the coming year. We have a good stock of program givers and organizers in our group. Drop Mari word at maaaprichard@gmail.com if you have a way to help out. The CMAG source guide is an extensive listing of metal and craft business resources compiled by CMAG members on an occasional basis. A copy of each edition of this guide is one of the benefits of membership. It's available from Membership Coordinators Susan and Earl Lovejoy in either handy (and easily published) CD form or in an archaic printed version. The last revision was in 2006. Email me guild@actonjewelry.com to volunteer for creating a new edition, of which I will coordinate the effort, wherein the greatest task is vetting all the entries. Workshops are a staple of organizations like CMAG and many members expressed a desire to have some produced in the coming year. Alma Rands is our coordinator email her at arands@comcast.net with ideas and expertise. If you have a workshop you want to lead, the guild can bring considerable expertise to bear in making it a reality. Attendees suggested photography, mold-making, stone setting and forging as topics of interest.
Bruce announced that he is still moving shop and still has duplicated tools and extra supplies and so forth that needs to be sold. Contact him at 503 796 5966 or bruce@mckaydesignsinc.com Maggie started a discussion of refinishing hammer faces which can be done entirely by hand with sand papers (blocked) and then going to the buff. Power sanding tools as for lapidary greatly reduce the required elbow grease. A good point was noted that many hammers, often found inexpensively, are of too poor a metal to warrant extravagant exertion. Respectfully submitted Wayne 3 November 2009

Spring Show ApplicationsBy Debra Carus
This from Debra Carus of the Spring Show Steering CommitteeHi Wayne, here's a little update for our newsletter - Hope this works for you - feel free to edit my ramblings. thanks! It's time to get serious about sending in your registration for the spring show. It always amazes me how fast the fall and winter months fly by, so don't forget to unearth the show application from under your workpile on your bench! Our goal is November 15th, and when you send your application, you are asked to send a booth deposit - what that means is this: if sending the total booth fee is not financially feasible at this time of year, please don't despair! Give Judy Acton a call (503 886 9037) to work out details of a deposit. Then sit back and enjoy the upcoming holiday season - we'll be scheduling show committee meetings starting in January when we really get hopping on the new year.
