Editor's CommentsSeems like I end up writing about www stuff a lot here but that's sort of what I'm into at the time. I'm frequently asked about printing the newsletter so I've included some ideas below, trying to make them as 'technically neutral' as I can. … I've put in an announcement for a member's new website, where I've added it's link to the CMAG Member Page. This is something any member can do, just send me an email to get started and we'll figure it out together. It ain't that tough, but expect a small patience requirement. … I can also include ads and announcements from members about almost anything and sometimes from civilians if they offer members something pertinent. Text space is limited (28k chars,) and remember, pictures are what this medium is about. … Speaking of websites, there's a link to the Seattle Metal Guild website to check out, down in the 'Web Stuff' section. … Wayne As always the newsletter(s) along with meeting pictures and so forth are available at our 'secret' archive | ||||

What you should bring: change, receipt book, priced goods, and your buying guests. GRAB BAG: Please DONATE an item to the $1 GRAB BAG. Our regular meeting room opens at 6:45. Come early and set up the goods. |
Sept & Oct - I have unfortunately not received any word about our September program. I know Linda Apodaca needs to hand this task off and that the committee is in transition. Hopefully things will come together soon. If you have any inclination to help, either with a program or especially to help organize, I'm betting she would still take your call. I'm scheduled for October, my fourth annual program IIRC and will be soldering some sterling together again, although I haven't figured out exactly what this time. I'm sort of leaning toward getting Judy to help with crocheted chain and I'd show how I make the caps. Other requests would probably receive some consideration. |
Report of CMAG General Meeting July 2009
Had no visitors this night and the meeting started off somberly with Mandy revisiting the ongoing Board Saga. Rebecca is unable to take over at Secretary so that position needs filling as well. I will continue to report on the general meetings as newsletter editor but can no longer attend board meetings so somebody is needed to make an official record of the decisions taken. Bruce McKay is possibly in line for the presidential suite later in the year. No veep is in sight and a Programs coordinator is urgently required. I'm expecting volunteers to be flocking to the upcoming general meeting.
Mandy talked about the group trip to the Tacoma Metal-Urge festival, visiting the art museum's Drutt Collection exhibit. She has since supplemented that inf with an email and a newsletter article which can be found below.Lee Haga reported contact from the Seattle Metal Guild inquiring about some further exchange between our organizations. They have also contacted us (me) with an email which is reproduced below in the On The Web section. Mary Wong reported on discussions with the Oregon Potters Assoc. about the Spring Show. She feels optimistic that support for a regional guilds show concept is gaining support. Plans for some joint advertising are going forward. "people are starting to get that this could be a making the pie bigger deal." I personally feel (and stated) that a joint regional show would be in a good position to get support from municipal and state officials, tourist- and economic stimulus-wise. … Linda Bretana is working the sponsorship lines and needs some ideas for what the Guild can offer in return. Mary and Lee brought up membership recruiting for CMAG. Word of mouth can be pretty effective so talk up the Guild at shows and metal classes and anywhere else you get together with other metal-heads. Madeline Janovec is featured on the cover of the First Friday Gallery Guide. A show at her gallery featuring her jewelry work runs through August. … Randy Rasmussen and Joe Apodaca went sapphire mining in Idaho and returned with forty one to three carat stones. Which need cutting now. … Lyn Simon has become a member of the Love Gallery in Sellwood. … Daniel Baca did the metal work for the Metro Commission on a covered wagon which can be seen at Cooper Mountain Park southwest of Beaverton. … Judith Watson is a member of the Pacific Art alliance in Lincoln City. … The CMAG library has magazines of interest for sale. Twenty-five cents each.

"Isamu Noguchi: stones & paper"July 14, 2009; presented by Lee Haga akaristore.stores.yahoo.net/isnogstonand.html www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/noguchi_i.html He felt like a man whose "eyes are black in New York but are blue in Tokyo." … "and so am always seeking identity with primal matter as there is no place for me." He worried that "if you have too facile a technique, you can only express what technique permits." … & said "work should be like having a conversation with oneself." Christo, Buckminster Fuller, M. Pei, Brancusi, Martha Graham, Diego Rivera. Kyoto, New York, Paris, Costa Mesa. An inspiring life and a densely packed video, too much to even give much of an idea here. The playing took allthe meeting time available and the audience seemed rapt, only very few annoying catcalls from the usual suspects. It's a shame really that there can't be discussion but I wouldn't like to be in charge of previewing and abridging what's presentated to make time for talking. Thanks to Lee for bringing this in. I'd say she's our resident "orientologist," (if that's even still an acceptable term) and a few years ago she was doing a "side show" when the Seattle Art Museum presented a Noguchi exhibit. It "gave her a new perspective on aesthetics." The tape was a gift from her brother and well used I'm sure. Wayne |

Printing the newsletter From Wayne
It's usually possible to print the newsletter from within the mail program that's displaying it, I can do it with the print commands on my MS Outlook Express okay. I think the place where confusion starts is with online mail servers like gmail or yahoo, which work by starting a server-side-browser-program running inside your internet browser, Internet Explorer, say. This will make the print command on your browser print all the stuff which comes with the mail program, like ads and such. Usually the mail program itself has its own a print command to print the email and this will work okay. If only you can find it.I'd prefer printing from the newsletter files which are posted on the CMAG website at www.cmaguild.org/picts.html. Once you've navigated there and found the issue you want, the web browser's printing feature in the one that I've found works the best. None of these options is perfect. Watch the text size setting in the view menu, (set to medium,) otherwise it will take many pages. Sometimes pictures will get cut between pages but this can't really be helped. But you'll get a reasonably readable copy. Wayne |
New Member SiteKathryn is the latest member linked from the page of CMAG members on the website. Here's the email she sent and the picture. (I didn't tell her I was going to publish this as an example of how to do it.) Wayne Dear Wayne, I finally have my website up and running. I have attached a thumbnail which I would like linked to www.kathryndevries.com. I have a link from my website to cmaguild.org. Let me know if my attached photo is too small. I reduced the actual photos quite a bit for the web, maybe too much. Thanks, Kathryn de Vries |

NWCraftfair Tami, at NWCraftfair is fairly persistent about sending the guild a monthly invitation. I may have mentioned this before? Had another look this month and liked the short list of small NW shows and the local flavor. Tami writes: "I would like to invite you and your members to visit nwCraftfair.com. We are an online community and store devoted to NW artists and craftspeople. Please share the website with your members. It may be a way for them to start an online presence or link to their existing site.

Seattle Metals Guild When this came from the SMA I forwarded it to CMAG "officials" but think it should go to the membership as well. I skinnied up their flyer as much as I could but it's still going to be a lump to email in the newsletter. I'd say these people are our closest "sister" organization. Check out their website for more. Wayne Hello, I am hoping to strengthen the ties between our two Guild...Seattle Metals Guild, that is. Here is the save the date card for our fall Symposium. I can send some actual cards if you would like. Let me know your thoughts on this connection thing. Best, Micki Lippe seattlemetalsguild.org/ ![]() |
