Editor's CommentsFirst place, this is much later than normal, between the show frenzy and some health crises (working themselves slowly to a satisfactory resolution, as is their wont,) and I’m sorry for that. Hopefully I won’t be sending this and the blast at the same time. Had a great time at the show, as always, sales were down quite a bit generally but not fatally, maybe on the order of 25%, don’t have the finals in yet. I didn’t get to the general meeting last time and only received pictures to make a report from, nobody sent in any anecdotes. You know who you are. Decided to write my main article about the website. See below. Wayne As always the newsletter(s) along with meeting pictures and so forth are available at our 'secret' archive
May 12, 2009 - GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM
"Yoga for CMAG" By Jane Carlsen ![]() ![]()
Our May program will be Yoga tailored for benchworkers and sculptors: how to prevent injury with a focus on gentle stretching of upper chest, shoulders, neck, arms and hands. Our yoga instructor is Jane Carlsen, an Iyengar teacher and owner of 1st Street Yoga. The Iyengar school emphasizes precise physical alignment to prevent injury. Her tips and demos will benefit everyone. |
First Street Yoga has a nice website which you can visit with the link below."From the outside, Yoga is easily mistaken as a just a form of exercise, and it is an excellent form of exercise. But as we work our bodies, yoga also directs us to exercise our awareness. This deliberate emphasis on weaving together physical and mental activity yields profound results for body and mind." |
![]() June 9 2009: I don’t have the program for June in hand. Personally I’m hoping for a potluck at Hug Point State Park. I’m sure the reconstituted program committee will come up with something far more topical. July and August are traditionally our popular audience participation swap meet and new member showcase programs. |

Late News: Cancel the barbeque, this just in from Linda: June 9, 2009: A CMAG Group-Sharing of Our Latest Work. Share several of your recent pieces, and tell the inspiration for the design, problems you had, what you learned, etc. More information in June newsletter. July 14, 2009: Lee Haga will share her visit to the amazing Isamu Noguchi Scultpure Gardens in Queens, NY via the CD of the sculptures. August 11, 2009: CMAG Annual Swap Meet- Start gathering the goods! |
![]() History of Created Stones, April 2009 presented by Bruce McKay Since Bruce was presenting this program, I didn’t have to be there to know that I missed some valuable information as well as a generally entertaining evening. Rumor is that he’s soon to quit finger numbing himself at the bench and will need other employment. He could do worse than to get himself a lantern show and go on the Chautauqua circuit, for he is always an able and knowledgeable speaker. I’ve actually had some occasion to use synthetic stones lately for some clients who needed massive sapphires and rubies to accent costumes used in their club hobby which is some variety of dance. CMAG Website: The Member Gallery As the webmaster for our guild, people frequently ask me questions about participation in the CMAG Member Gallery on our website so here’s an attempt to summarizer and review. The member page of the CMAG website is open to all members. In the past there was a surcharge to have an individual page but that is no longer the case. In the past there were strict limitations on what you could post and how it was to be arranged. This also is no longer the case although it’s probably important to generally keep to a format that has some continuity across the whole section. But strict limitations on picture sizes and numbers no longer apply. Nowadays the major limitation is the indolence of your webmaster. The home page of the member gallery is divided into two sections, a table of thumbnails at the top and a text listing of the current membership at the bottom. The listing on the bottom is updated at least once a year which probably isn’t frequently enough. If you’re name isn’t there and it should be SEND ME AN E-MAIL. [This is the key to any process at our website. I work from e-mails. Currently the address is guild@actonjewelry.com but you can just reply to this newsletter or get the mailto link off the site. If you e-mail via the link and it seems weird and I don’t reply, likely your defaults aren’t set to match the way you actually do e-mail, although this problem is lessening of late. Just TYPE the address in your usual e-mail program.] If you listed a website address on the latest membership renewal sheet and if that address worked for me when I tried it, then your listed name should be a link to that site. Feel free to reciprocate by linking your site to the Guild site. If you would like your thumbnail in the table, then send me a picture. BY E-MAIL. JPEGs (a sort of computer file) are the best and probably what you will have but I can open many other kinds and if I can’t I will tell you and we’ll fix the problem. It’s only a few E-MAILS. If it means anything to you, the thumbs end up 100 pixels square but that’s my bailiwick to fix. Although it’s not required, the thumbs normally link to something, either your website if you have one and that’s what you choose, or a personal page on the CMAG website. It’s more of an effort to create the personal page, you will need more pictures and some slight text (artist statement and/or bio,) but these pages add a lot to our website, so I encourage you to try it and will help in every way I can. Most of the personal pages contain live links to the person’s website and e-mail and might also include phone contact and P. O. Box. Or even physical address and hours if it’s a retail location. Showing your work in the Member Gallery is one of the things you buy with your dues. It’s also an important part of the face CMAG presents to the public. I’ve even heard a couple times that people have picked up commissions from there. But don’t hold your breath. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t and to consider participating if you’re not. Wayne

![]() A Thank You From Mandy By Mandy Allen Wow, another Spring Show under our belts. It’s amazing how much work goes into it and how many people pull together to get that work done. Big thanks to the Steering Committee; Debra Carus, Mona Mozeico, Jessica Vasi and Judy Acton, and their year of work. And also thanks to the CMAG members who weren’t in the show but gave their time and support with the Gallery, Silent Auction and so much more. I had a great time visiting with everyone and seeing all the fantastic work. I’m pleased to announce that several people have volunteered to become board members and help with other important tasks; they will be thanked properly next month once I compile the complete list. But we are not out of the woods yet. We still need a program committee chair and, you guessed it, a President and Vice President. Time is ticking; we are making personal pleas but coming up empty so far. If you are considering any of these positions please contact me ASAP. Mandy Allen 503-281-7820 allenmetalarts@gmail.com
![]() FERRIC CHLORIDE ETCHING, AND CLOISONNE WORKSHOPS From Alma Rands I am delighted to report that a number of people have already signed up for the workshops. There is still room for additional participants, so if you are interested please send an email, or phone me so that a space can be reserved for you, and so that I will have a head count and know how much in the way of supplies that I have to order.
For full details about the workshop refer to the March CMAG newsletter. The Cloisonne Workshop will be held the weekend of May 23-24, and includes all materials with the exception of some items that you already have around your house. The Ferric Chloride Workshop will be held the weekend of June 20-21, and will include most materials. We will be etching copper with the Ferric Chloride, as this is an inexpensive way to learn the process. Also the etched copper can be roller printed onto silver, or gold, giving wonderful textures. For those who prefer to etch directly on silver, the process is exactly the same as for working on copper. The only difference is that for etching silver, one would use Ferric Nitrate, (which is much safer than nitric acid.). Once you learn all the steps involved in working on copper, it is easy to make the switch to working with silver. We will be working with PNP(Press and Peel ) as our resist, which I prefer as it always gives excellent results. However, for those who are interested, I will have a supply of Transfer Paper for them to experiment with. This is a wonderful opportunity for those unfamiliar with photo etching, or Cloisonne enameling to learn in a friendly environment. Also, it will give members who are new to the Guild an opportunity to meet with other members. For Lunch, participants can bring a sandwich and I will provide my special gourmet soups, beverages, and snacks. If you have any questions, email me arands@comcast.com, or give me a phone call (503) 644-1286.

“Love Art” [ed note] This came to the Guild e-mail. They don’t exactly say if they are looking to purchase the sculpture but might be worth a call. No website that I could find. Wayne Hello, We are soon opening “Love Art” – an eclectic, contemporary art gallery in Sellwood. The artists who are joining us are stunning and diverse in their work.We picked up the Creative Metal Arts Guild flier at the show last weekend and thought that this is the place for our connection! We are looking for someone who does garden art – or large metal art – for the space in front of the gallery. This is nearly our last piece for this phase of our opening. Would you notify your membership of this opportunity? We would love to chat with artists whom are interested. We also have space for 1 or 2 fabulous jewelry artists – in addition to the ones who are coming in. The gallery is located in the heart of Sellwood’s Antique Row at 8036 SE 21st Ave. Our home phones are 503-477-7614 or 503-255-0267. Thank you so much. Best, Ruby Campbell and Heather Love |

Inquiry From England [ed note] This comes to us from Rebecca in England who is looking for foreign exchange & symposium partners. I searched around to vet the source and found the links below. Nice work if you can get it. Wayne Rebecca Skeels
Jewellers and Silversmiths Network, 39 Whitmore Green, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 9AF, England Rebecca@skeels.co.uk Dear Sir/ Madam, I am writing to you on behalf of the Jewellers and Silversmiths Network, based in Farnham, Surrey, England. Recently we were lucky enough to win a grant to assist us in running an exchange and a symposium. We are currently looking for a similar group to our own to take part in the exchange and symposium and was wandering if could suggest an appropriate group for us to contact. The symposiums theme will be the different uses of materials in contemporary jewellery and silversmithing. We will focus on the unusual and groundbreaking use of materials in the areas of contemporary jewellery and silversmithing, sharing ideas, thoughts and techniques. The exchange will be an integral part of a bigger project, reciprocating skills sharing and materials knowledge with the American exchange partners bringing valuable resources in terms of knowledge to the symposium. By having international speakers and participants, we believe both our own network members and regional peers will be able to gain a new perspective on the materials we use and how to use them. We also hope that the exchange partners will be able to also apply for funding to host a symposium in the US. Thank you very much for your help, if you require any more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely Rebecca Skeels Skeels' site Jewelry network Farnham Maltings |

Miklja Photography [ed note] A photography studio in Lake Oswego sent the following email. Their website works good and has several jewelry pics. It’s hard to judge jewelry shots via the web. Didn’t see sculpture but lots of stuff. If you’re in the market maybe try the complimentary test. I decided to give them a slot here because they offered something free and it gave me a shot at editorializing. We don’t have a paid ad policy for the e-news, don’t know if we want one. People often ask me to send ads along to the membership, often implying it's my responsibility to "inform" my constituents of the "service." Mostly I just do stuff like MCC, OSAC or SNAG. I try like the very dickens to avoid doing special membership e-blasts beyond the meeting announcement. Wayne Miklja Studios offers complementary test shots of your latest pieces in our studio with your choice of background. They can be used for websites or art submissions, etc. Call to make a free appointment for up to 3 of your pieces. And, now's the time to get great photography at our great promotional rate.
