| Editor's Comments I apologize for the somewhat late and abbreviated newsletter this month. The holidays have hit me a bit early with some urgent orders (a good thing!) and some of the newsletter’s contributors won’t be back until January. Please remember that there is NO GENERAL MEETING THIS MONTH (that would have been tomorrow.) ........ Wayne |

January 13, 2009 - GENERAL MEETING PROGRAM
Using QuikBooks – By Marie Escamilla Start your new year out right by getting your office and books in order. On January 13, 2009 our meeting will feature Marie Escamilla of Sterling Office Services who will give a presentation about the uses of the popular and versatile bookkeeping program Intuit QuickBooks for your small business. Some CMAG members already use QB and rely on Marie’s expertise on an ongoing basis. So get out your new 2009 calendars and mark January 13 as a must-come meeting. |
Our regular meeting room opens at 6:45. Come early for a good seat. |
| NOVEMBER CANCELLED - The November General Meeting is cancelled because the room at Multnomah Art Center isn't available due to holiday. |

Minutes of CMAG General Meeting 14 October 2008 The meeting was called to order on time with Mandy Allen presiding. Daniel Baca, Susan & Earl Lovejoy and Jane Powers, all of whom have attended general meetings in the past as visitors, attended October’s meeting as new members. As ever, my apologies for misspellings of names.
Judy Acton reported for the Spring Show Steering Committee. The show has reached the critical number of exhibitors but openings are still available so make contact now if you’re at all interested. Judy suggested that some accommodation in the payment of fees could often be negotiated, if that's what's holding you basck. She also reported on a meeting with representatives of other guilds and the convention center regarding load in and out difficulties and procedures, which she characterized as ‘encouraging.’The new library books have arrived. One, “1000 Rings,” shows pieces by CMAG members Tami Dean and Joe Apodaca and, I think perhaps, Lee Haga was mentioned as well. The other is about patinas and replaces a popular holding which had gone missing. The library still has many trade magazines for sale for $1.00 (obo) which funds will go to new purchases. The January program was announced by Linda Apodaca and will be a demonstration and Q & A on the accounting program Quick Books by Marie Escamilla. The Apodacas and Tami Dean both use Marie for their accounting needs and her presentation comes highly recommended. Mandy Allen announced that in January she will spearhead a strong arm campaign to increase participation at the board level. She pointed out that it is imperative that more members begin to share the burden necessary to organizing and operating our guild. The current situation cannot continue, a half dozen NEW board members are absolutely required for the new member year.
Margaret Frison informed the members of the donation of a complete copy of the Rhino & Flamingo Cad/Cam jewelry design system, complete with scholarship to a training session. This is to be auctioned for Spring Show sponsorship funds, Dutch Auction style, which means send your highest bid to Margaret and on November 15th she will open the bids and announce the winner. This is very sophisticated software and the package would cost hundreds of dollars at least.Mary Wong reminds members that the annual CASA bead auctions are beginning and contributions are needed. Theme is Hearts, Homes and Kids. Beads smaller than one cubic inch with three mm hole(s.) Contact Mary with donations. Beads are needed as early as January. Wayne Acton presented a demonstration on fabricating silver ring bands. Respectfully submitted Wayne 10 November 2008 |
Ring Bands October, 2008The program was presented by yours truly so you'd think it would be easy to write about but that doesn't seem to be the case. Barbara got a good picture in the fire (left.) This isn’t my normal torch but it’s very similar; air and propane. In my studio, I use a larger flame and a big propane tank but the same deal. I do use this one for a few tasks, closing jump rings and fluxing. I own an oxygen torch, but it’s not set up. This third hand is cobbled together from spare parts and works nice to hold rings. The paste solder below can still be purchased from Simon and Golub. The other two small pictures show the band demonstrated (left) and it’s use in a setting. Wayne | ||||

CASA Beads
Now is the time to start thinking about a very important subject: What bead
will you make this year for our CASA neckpieces? Our theme remains Hearts,
Homes and Kids. In the past, we have raised tens of thousands of dollars for our charity, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children; www.nationalcasa.org/) and this money has helped countless children in our community. We have raffled off some of the pieces at our show, and others have been auctioned off by CASA at their fundraising events. In addition to the support we give to this local charity, our neckpieces serve to get CMAG noticed by the community. There are donors who go to these events specifically to see the new CMAG pieces. These people are collectors; there have been actual bidding wars! Everyone who sees our pieces recognizes our name, CMAG, and they usually turn up at our Spring Show to purchase work by the people who made the beads.
We recently received a wonderful letter of thanks from the Clackamas County
Oregon CASA chapter, in which they informed us that we helped them serve
almost 50% of the children in need of a voice in court in their area. We
can help them do more by making this year our best ever! MAKE THOSE BEADS!
REMEMBER: Beads must be smaller than 1" cubic, and they must have a hole at
least 3mm in diameter. NO BEAD IS TOO SMALL! If you have a bead or if you have questions, please call Mary Wong at 503 452 1939. Thank You!. |

Web review? Has anyone checked out Ganoskin? These people send us a LOT of email stuff, which I haven't had much chance to check out but which sometimes seems worth while.
